This is a screening technique used to detect early damage to the lungs resulting from inhalation of toxic substances or particulate matter.

Many industrial processes are carried out in an atmosphere that may become contaminated by dust, fumes, vapours or other industrial contaminants. Although with some substances exposure can have an immediate effect, many others may cause asthma and repeated exposure could damage the lungs.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH 2002) state that where a hazardous substance is present a COSHH Assessment should be carried out. Recommendations are then given for engineering control measures and safe systems of work in order to control the risk at source and therefore protect everyone in the workplace. As a last resort, Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) can be considered - but this only protects the person wearing it. PPE may also restrict the wearer by limiting mobility and visibility and the added weight may be significant.

Lung function tests for the employee may also detect early damage to lungs from non-industrial sources such as smoking. OCK HEALTH recommends that this test be repeated annually so that any changes in results can be compared, with recommendations for further medical intervention as required. (Although lung function test results may be satisfactory this should not be taken as proof that the employee’s work environment is safe).

Ock Health offers this lung function service on-site so that there is minimal interruption of the employee’s work schedule.
